Remember the ultimate tie breaker game Rock Paper Scissors? Well it’s time to put those skills to good use!

The Rock Paper Scissors Tournament is a fun, no equipment necessary, easy to play competition. Contestants will face off in pairs, attempting to eliminate their opponents one by one. The tournament is open to anyone 21 years of age or older. Participants are encouraged to dress up and bring their best, creative nicknames for game time.

No pre-registration is required. The Crush Girls will be on-site the evening of the tournament to sign up potential contestants. Sign up starts at 9:30 p.m. and the tournament will begin at 10:00 p.m. Music will be provided by DJ Lou.

The tournament will be overseen by select judges and specific rules and regulations will apply. The winner will receive one year’s worth of concert tickets to House of Rock, excluding fundraisers and reserved seats and bragging rights. Only one will win…

Getting back to basics and letting love flow is the result of quirky but inventive singer-songwriter-guitarist Donavon Frankenreiter sought on his 2012 album “Start Livin’ “. Stripped down to Frankenreiter and longtime bassist Matt Grundy, bright and breezy lyrics intertwine with blissful acoustic guitar and interesting instrumentation ranging from ukulele to banjo and simple hand claps or various shaken objects

The evening will feature an acoustic performance with Donavon Frankenreiter and Matt Grundy and include live raffle giveaways with Billabong gear and signed Donavon collectibles and a chance to leave with some great surf photography! Proceeds benefit Waves of Impact, which offers surf camps for injured military veterans and children facing special challenges. Corpus Christi’s Flatbroke follows with afterparty show.

Waves of Impact was formed to introduce individuals facing exceptional challenges in their lives to the thrill of being in the ocean and riding waves. The ocean has a great way of washing away stress and sensory overload and Waves of Impact emphasizes this in their surf camps.

Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Advance tickets go off sale at midnight on May 17th. Tickets will be available at the door.

Hard rocking local veterans Sweet Daddy finish off the Wednesday Working Class Series at House of Rock. Show begins at 5:30 and ends by 8 p.m. Admission is $5; get $2 off admission with work credentials or a name tag, Active since 1993, Nathan McLain (guitar, vocals), Jerry Moore (bass, vocals), Chris Garcia (guitar, vocals) and Kelly Moore (drums, vocals) have been the torchbearers of good ol’ heavy and melodic rock ‘n’ roll originals in Corpus Christi.

The quartet will be playing the entire two hours Wednesday, so expect some older songs the group hasn’t played in years. The first 50 people will receive the group’s album “Bring the Cherries.” Very sweet, indeed. The Working Class Concert Series is presented by University of Incarnate Word and Classic Rock 104.5. The House of Rock spotlight is on the locals this week — Vulgar Display of Power/Refueled on Wednesday, Bertha on Friday and Cavegirl on Saturday.

First up, Vulgar Display of Power/Refueled is Wednesday’s Working Class Concert Series performer. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.; show is over by 8 p.m. Get $2 off admission with work credentials or a name tag. They’ll be joined by Gravy. Vulgar Display of Power recreates Pantera’s 1992 album of the same name with the intensity the Arlington band was known for. The same group of Tony Gomez (vocals), Steve Pedraza (lead guitar), Fidel Tagel (drums) and Joey Perez (bass) also is Refueled, specializing in metal covers from Drowning Pool to Metallica to Judas Priest and more.

Friday is Bertha, a progressive rock/psychedelic/blues band featuring Corey Stringer (guitar), Jarrod Hinson (lead guitar), Abel Lopez (bass) and Chris Darlington (drums). Show is at 9:30 with Peace & Quiet (Corpus Christi indie rock band with a psych-folk foundation) and Mama Tried (thrash country band from Galveston). The raucous duo of Ryan Woessner and Dell Pollard stomp, howl and thrash their way blues-rock jams as Cavegirl on Saturday night. The twosome rocks in the same vein as the White Stripes, Black Keys and others before them while putting its own stamp on the genre. Doors open at 7 p.m.

Collie Buddz surely is living every day like it’s his birthday. After creating a catchy version of modern roots reggae that blends hip-hop, dancehall and Soca, the Bermuda-born artist has been riding his surge of worldwide popularity and acclaim from artists in the hip-hop and reggae worlds since his self-titled debut in 2007.

Collie Buddz appears Saturday at the House of Rock on the Light It Up Tour with Cris Cab and New Kingston. Doors open at 8 p.m. Buddz has kept the party going with a steady stream of singles, remixes and an EP since as he works on a long-anticipated second album.

Cris Cab is a 20-year-old who is mentored by Pharrell Williams and is a recording partner with Wyclef Jean. His full-length mix tape of pop, reggae and soul called “Echo Boom” came out in 2012. New Kingston blends reggae, R&B and hip-hop for a New York meets Jamaica sound. Check out their latest album, “Kingston University,” released in February.

John Cortez Band works as hard at keeping the blues alive in Corpus Christi as Cathouse does at keeping loud guitar rock ‘n’ roll going, making them both fitting choices for Wednesday’s Working Class Concert Series (doors open at 5:30 p.m.; show is over by 8 p.m.). King and more. Cathouse features the powerhouse blues/rock trio of Miguel Divila, Ralph Divila and David Garcia with influences including Cream, Deep Purple and Jeff Beck.

Additional events during ArtWalk will include:

• An installation by Ryan O’Malley at The Art Tunnel at Retama Park

• Students from regional universities will exhibit art in the tunnel and The Hot Spot Gallery, as well as posting street murals

• The Texas Iron Commission will be hosting an iron pour in the parking lot across from the House of Rock

The event is open to all ages from 6:00 pm – 2:00 am. Admission is free for students and until 9:00 p.m. for the general public.

The Voodoo Glow Skulls have been delivering hard and fast West Coast skacore since 1988. A wave of Spanish and English lyrics flow forth as the band meshes hardcore punk, ska and Mexican music — or as they call it “California street music” — in a manner that gets the fans revved up and moshing every time. The Riverside, Calif., band shows no signs of slowing down any time soon, releasing “Break the Spell” in 2012. They’re joined by Wilmington, Calif., ska-punk band Left Alone and local favorites Avenue Rockers and Johnny Five on Friday at House of Rock. Doors are at 8 p.m. Switchblade Jesus and Anthem for the Sun will play afterward in a late show.

There will be nothing but positive vibes in the form of reggae/roots flowing from the House of Rock stage Thursday with Los Angeles’ Fortunate Youth and Hawaii’s Inna Vision. They are joined by House Blend for the show (tickets are available online). Doors open at 7:30 p.m. From their “Up-Lifted” EP in 2010 and their first full release “Irie State of Mind” in 2011, Fortunate Youth brings a high-energy vibe and a positive stage presence with their music. An unexpected on-tour lineup change inspired Inna Vision’s “Don’t Stop” album released in 2012 as the band chooses to focus on staying positive and following your dreams despite obstacles. But it’s not all just about the message for both groups — they can really groove, too.

A key personnel change and a desire to explore new sounds has kept Swedish melodic metalcore band Soilwork from treading the usual terrain. With co-fonder Peter Wichers leaving and frequent sub David Andersson permanently taking his spot, Soilwork — so named because the group is always working from the ground up — challenged itself on its ninth album and came up with a 20-track double album. The result, “The Living Infinite,” was released March 5 and features a diversified, progressive sound co-founder Bjorn “Speed” Strid sought after opening up songwriting duties to other members of the band. 

Soilwork plays Monday with Jeff Loomis, Black Guard, Bonded by Blood and Hatchet. Doors are at 6:00 p.m. Tickets are available at Disc-Go-Round, House of Rock and our online box office.
